Petrochemical Labels: Secure Your Brand with Solvent-Proof Precision
Don't let non-compliant Petrochemical Labels for your brand dissolve away!
In the world of industrial coatings, a leaking solvent or a drip of thinner can turn a standard label into a messy, unreadable smear in seconds.
Whether you are supplying 1litre tins or 20litres drums, your packaging needs a compliance in petrochemical labels that works as hard as the chemicals inside.
Which Specific Material Should I get for my Petrochemical Labels?
Since these substances (especially thinners) are highly aggressive, we recommend using Polyester (PET) or Polypropylene (PP) with a Chemical-Resistant Over-Laminate.
Standard vinyl will often "pucker" or dissolve if a solvent like turpentine drips down the side.
✅ The "Life-Proof" Label
Our petrochemical labels are engineered for high-risk and heavy-use products, from aggressive solvents and fuels to industrial chemicals and hazardous drum storage.
✅ Do I need separate front and back labels?
In the petrochemical industry, the answer depends on your container size and branding goals, but from a compliance standpoint, the rules are very specific.
For products like solvents, thinners, and industrial chemicals in South Africa (SANS 10234), here is how to decide:
1. The "Single Wrap-Around" Approach (Most Common)
For 1L, 5L, and 20L drums, it is highly recommended to use one large wrap-around label instead of separate front and back pieces.
- Why: Petrochemical labels must contain a lot of mandatory text (GHS pictograms, Signal Words, Hazard Statements, and Precautionary Statements).
- Efficiency: Using one wrap-around label ensures that the safety information is physically attached to the branding. It also reduces application time in your workshop.
2. The "Front & Back" Approach (Branding Focus)
You can use separate labels, but you must follow these rules:
- Front Label: Focuses on your eg Mzansi Label Lab branding, product name (e.g., "Premium Xylene"), and volume (e.g., "5L").
- Back Label: This MUST contain all the regulatory GHS data. In South Africa, if the front doesn't have the hazard symbols, the back must be immediately visible and legible.
- Risk: If the back label peels off due to a chemical spill, the container becomes non-compliant and dangerous, even if the front branding is still there.
The "Hierarchy of Information" Rule
If you go with two labels, the GHS Pictograms (the red diamonds) are often required to be on the "main display icon" or at least very clearly linked.
If a user picks up a bottle of thinner, they shouldn't have to "hunt" for the flame icon.
🍀 Film INGREDIENTS
Our petrochemical substrates are engineered from high-performance Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) and Polyester (PET) polymers, specifically chosen for their molecular density and resistance to hydrocarbon swelling.
Unlike standard monomeric vinyls, these synthetic bases are paired with an extra-permanent, high-tack acrylic adhesive designed to bite into low-energy surfaces like HDPE plastic and treated steel.
To ensure the print remains legible under heavy use, the material is finished with a chemically-inert over-laminate, creating a physical barrier that prevents aggressive solvents like toluene, xylene, and benzene from reaching the ink or dissolving the bond.

The Lab Guide: How to Prep Your Art for 4K Clarity
To ensure your labels come out looking sharp, vibrant, and professional, please follow these 5 "Lab Rules" before uploading:
1. High-Resolution Only (300 DPI): Ensure your file is high-resolution. If you zoomed in on your screen and it looks "blurry" or "pixelated," it will print that way too. For the best results, export your design at 300 DPI.
2. Use the Right Format: We prefer PDF, AI, or high-res PNG files. Avoid sending screenshots or images saved from WhatsApp, as these are compressed and lose quality.
3. Keep Text Readable (6pt Minimum): Small batch doesn't mean small quality. Keep your ingredient lists and "Fine Print" at 6pt font or larger to ensure every word is legible after printing.
4. The "Safe Zone" (2mm): Keep important text and logos at least 2mm away from the edge of your label. This ensures nothing gets cut off during the precision die-cutting process.
5. Convert to CMYK: For the most accurate colors, design your artwork in CMYK mode. Colors on a glowing phone screen (RGB) always look slightly different when printed on physical film.
Pro Tip for Canva Users:
If you are designing in Canva, always download your file as "PDF Print" and check the box for "Flatten PDF" for the highest possible output quality.
✍🏿 Lab Notes
Our petrochemical-grade substrates are engineered from high-performance Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) and Polyester (PET) polymers.
These materials are specifically chosen for their high molecular density, which prevents the "swelling" or puckering common in standard vinyl when exposed to aggressive hydrocarbons.
Unlike basic monomeric films, these synthetics are paired with an extra-permanent, high-tack acrylic adhesive designed to "bite" into low-energy surfaces like HDPE plastic and treated steel drums.
To ensure your branding and safety data remain legible, every sheet is finished with a chemically-inert over-laminate, creating a physical barrier that stops industrial solvents like toluene, xylene, and benzene from reaching the ink or dissolving the bond.
